Review: Dread Nation (Dread Nation #1) by Justina Ireland

One of the most original zombie survival stories I’ve read in a while and I really enjoyed the story on the whole. I wasn’t expecting the range of emotions I had following this alternative history story about a young woman named Jane who’s trained in the art of slaying Shamblers, the zombies that are featured in the story. I think the combination of Jane’s strong voice and humor, the blend of history and fantasy the plot showcases, the action and immediate peril, as well as the realistic showcase of femininity and racial tension/struggles/marginalization really made this novel stand out in my mind. The audiobook narration by Bhani Turpin was very strong, and that didn’t surprise me since I usually enjoy her performances in audio. Overall, I thought it was a strong opening for a series, and I’m curious to see where the series ends up.

Overall score: 4.5/5 stars.
